Media Strategy

All Media inquiries for the Hui Taumata taking place on May 31, 2024

Media lead: Radio Kahungunu, Manager, Apikara Brightwell.

  1. Key Objectives and Key Messages:

    • This Hui Taumata stems from the National Hui for Unity hosted by Kiingi Tūheitia at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia earlier this year following the announcement of the new Coalition Government signed between National, Act and NZ First. The Coalition Government announced plans that included policy changes detrimental to Māori. Iwi leaders from around the motu signalled the need to protect all whānau Māori by uniting.

    • The key message at the Hui-ā-Motu was Kotahitanga - Unite and move forward together.

    • The Hui Taumata will bring 'Māori Thought Leaders' from around the nation together to further communicate the kaupapa of Kotahitanga. The kaupapa is Kotahitanga. The Hui Taumata platform will allow for 'Thought Leaders'  to share thoughts and proposals on how we can successfully move forward with determination and unity.

    • The media plan includes how we will communicate with the nation before, during and after the Hui Taumata.

  2. Target Audience Identification:

    • Our target audience is all of Māoridom throughout the world, our whānau, extended whānau, iwi leaders, hapū leaders, whānau leaders, rangatahi, and all individuals and groups interested in supporting the wellness of whānau Māori.

    • We have analysed the demographics and interests of our key audience. We are using several communication platforms to ensure we reach our target audience.

    • Identify other potential target audiences, such as local community members, indigenous groups, policymakers, and media outlets.

  3. Media Outreach Plan:

    • Utilise Radio Kahungunu's platform to promote the event through on-air announcements, interviews with organisers and speakers, and discussions about the importance of the Hui Taumata.

    • Develop press releases and media kits to distribute to local newspapers, television stations, and online news outlets.

    • Leverage social media platforms to create buzz around the event, share behind-the-scenes content, and engage with the audience using hashtags related to the Hui Taumata.

  4. Speaker Engagement:

    • Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is monitoring a 'Register to speak' process to ensure all registered speakers have a chance to kōrero and be heard.

    • This process will ensure alignment with our kaupapa.

    • Registering speakers in advance will help us facilitate a smooth-running hui and maximise opportunities for everyone to kōrero.

    • Confirmed speakers will receive notification and will be allotted 3 minutes to kōrero.

    • The deadline for speaker registration is Monday, May 27.

    • We will be capturing all discussions as the hui will be live-streamed.

    • For further details, visit www.huitaumata.co.nz

  5. Media Partnerships and Collaborations:

    • Produce post-event content, such as articles, videos, and photo galleries, to recap the event and keep the momentum going.

    • Share post-event coverage across Radio Kahungunu's platforms and with media partners to extend the event's impact beyond the day itself.

  8. Evaluation and Feedback:
