BACKGROUND

Timeline

  • In October 2023 the National Government announced its 100-day plan.

  • On ​3 November 2023 the new Government results were announced and the new Coalition Government agreement was signed between National, Act and NZ First.

  • On 29 November 2023 the National Government confirmed their 100 day plans which included policy changes detrimental to Māori. Iwi leaders from around the motu signaled the need to protect all whānau Māori.

  • On ​2 December 2023 Kiingi Tuheitia met with iwi leaders who indicate further concern about the rhetoric of the coalition government around the select committee review of the principles of the Tiriti o Waitangi. A few key points are discussed - one is to hold a Hui-ā-Motu to bring the people together.

  • Several iwi hold Hui-ā-iwi to collate hapū aspirations. ​

  • 6 December 2023, Te Tari o te Kiingitanga invites all iwi to a National Hui for Unity to take place on 20 January 2024.

  • The Hui-ā-Motu is hosted by Kiingi Tuheitia at Turangawaewae, Ngaruawahia with an overwhelming turnout of over 10,000 in attendance. The overall key message received at the Hui-ā-Motu was that we work together – Kotahitanga. Iwi were encouraged to collectively take their concerns to the Ratana Pa - 25 January Celebrations and to the Waitangi Day Celebrations in Waitangi. An overwhelming clear message resounded at each event where iwi leaders spoke unitedly.

  • On 22 February 2024 the National Iwi Chairs Forum (NICF) met in Te Arawa for a Rangatiratanga Wānanga. Among other things, the leaders held a 'Tino Rangatiratanga' session and what this looks like in 2024. A summary of notes can be attained. Communication was highlighted as an area to improve and support whānau, hapū, iwi to help educate and further collectivise the knowledge base and efforts, and also to ensure information is shared across the nation.

This website has been set up to collaborate across iwi communication channels, utilising the skills, capability and resources of a Comms Collective to effectively communicate with everyone in one space. This website is a vehicle only, not a means to an end. The vision, principles and framework of this kaupapa will come from the united approach of ngā iwi katoa. The shared information is being gathered by a collective of iwi communicators in association with the National Iwi Chairs Forum.

A Hui Taumata will be held in Ngāti Kahungunu on 31 May 2024 hosted by Omāhu Marae to identify solutions for Māori Unity - Kotahitanga.
