Timeline
A Hui Taumata was held in Ngāti Kahungunu on 31 May 2024 at Omāhu Marae to identify solutions for Māori Unity - Kotahitanga. To recap what’s happened to get us to this point leading up to the Hui Taumata see the timeline below:

30 November 2023
Iwi leaders around the motu are concerned about the governments signals to reverse, remove, dismiss, dissemble, and unravel years of hard work surrounding Māori cultural recognition and wellbeing. Iwi leaders signal the need to protect all whānau Māori.

Hui-ā-Motu is hosted by Kiingi Tuheitia at Turangawaewae, Ngaruawahia. An estimated 10,000 Māori and non-Māori from around Aotearoa attended. The overall message is clear: We need to work together and unite our efforts to have more impact in our stance. In Kiingi Tuheitia's closing address at this hui, he said, “Let the four winds speak”. Leaders planned to converge to voice their opinions at Ratana Pa (25 Jan) and Waitangi (6 Feb).

The kaupapa continued at Rātana Pa just four days after the Hui-ā-Motu, attracting about 7000 people, showing our united efforts.

Among other things, iwi leaders held a 'Tino Rangatiratanga' session to further discuss ways to support whānau, hapū, iwi to further collectivise the knowledge base and efforts of iwi in the Kotahitanga space, and ensure information is shared across the nation so we can all move forward together.
31 May 2024
The Hui Taumata was hosted by Kahungunu. There was an action call to Māoridoms’ thought leaders from around the motu to put forward proposals and discussion documents on achieving Kotahitanga before the hui, so they can be considered and discussed by those in attendance on May 31.
24 June 2024
After the Hui Taumata, Kahungunu called for interested persons to be part of a group to progress the kaupapa. A group called 'Te Amorangi Ki Mua' was formed to take the kaupapa and the proposed models forward. A media release was sent out. Click here to view it. 'Te Amorangi Ki Mua' have met frequently to discuss and contribute to a way forward.

The shared information is being gathered by a collective of iwi communicators in association with the National Iwi Chairs Forum.
